Summary

In an inexplicable worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born to women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy。 Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world。"

These seven children form the Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers。 Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel。 Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again。

Collecting: The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite 1-6, as well as out-of-print short stories and an expanded sketchbook section featuring work by Gabriel Bá, James Jean, and Gerard Way

Yikes, I was expecting this to be better。 Wanted to read it before finally watching the show; now less interested in the show because of how little I liked this。 Lousy writing, but two stars for having pretty solid art。

ahhh the TV show is better! that's not an opinion I feel like I usually have。 but this story is SO quick, I don't know if I could have followed it at all without watching the show。 I liked the art style, but I felt the characters were more fully realized and the story more compelling as told in the show。 there's just so much more to it。 the show's music and poignant/heartbreaking scenes are some of what I enjoy the most, and that's just not in the comic。 the comic does do a few things in a way t ahhh the TV show is better! that's not an opinion I feel like I usually have。 but this story is SO quick, I don't know if I could have followed it at all without watching the show。 I liked the art style, but I felt the characters were more fully realized and the story more compelling as told in the show。 there's just so much more to it。 the show's music and poignant/heartbreaking scenes are some of what I enjoy the most, and that's just not in the comic。 the comic does do a few things in a way that TV or film would still struggle to do, perhaps (some of the special effects and technological stuff - although it seems like that's not much of a limitation these days。。。) anyway I found myself appreciating this more as a foundation for a show but I don't know what I would have thought without already watching。 。。。more

This is good stuff。 I had forgotten how bonkers Way gets in his writing, but it usually works out。 I do think that Vanya’s stuff gets a little rushed, and that it’s tough to service six characters in six issues so everyone is more of sketch than getting to probe deeper, but I suppose that’s what future books are for。

Victoria Hawco

By the time I figured out who was who and which number was which the book was over。

I've never been so disappointed in a comic before。The text didn't make sense and I couldn't tell the difference between most of the characters。 And the jumps in time didn't make my job easier。 I've never been so disappointed in a comic before。The text didn't make sense and I couldn't tell the difference between most of the characters。 And the jumps in time didn't make my job easier。 。。。more

I REALLY like the premise of this。 But I think it could have been executed。。。 better? More clearly? It jumps around a lot。 I still enjoyed it though。 I feel like I tried to read this like a decade ago and just could not get into it, but I'm happy I thought to read it again。 Gerard Way IS my savior, after all。 Plus I wanna check out the show! I’ve heard a lot about The Umbrella Academy, so I decided it was finally time to dive into the first volume – Apocalypse Suite – and give it a try。 I’ll be honest and say that I’m not the biggest fan of graphic novels, in fact I’m super picky, but I was curious enough to dive in。Apocalypse Suite was an interesting introduction to The Umbrella Academy world, and I happily devoured this in no time。 Although it was an easy read that had me curious about how things would play out, it did not wow me I’ve heard a lot about The Umbrella Academy, so I decided it was finally time to dive into the first volume – Apocalypse Suite – and give it a try。 I’ll be honest and say that I’m not the biggest fan of graphic novels, in fact I’m super picky, but I was curious enough to dive in。Apocalypse Suite was an interesting introduction to The Umbrella Academy world, and I happily devoured this in no time。 Although it was an easy read that had me curious about how things would play out, it did not wow me quite as much as I had hoped it would。 There were quite a few things that were never quite as clear as I had hoped, and this stopped me from being fully invested。All in all, interesting but not quite for me。 。。。more

High 3。5⭐️ I wanted to start getting into graphic novels so I got this one at the library because I want to watch the show。 I was confused at some parts but I still thought it was good

Just watched this series on Netflix。 Yes, I'm behind the times。 Loved it so much! The graphic novel? Well?。。。 It was interesting。 Very different from the Netflix series。 It answered some questions, but I found the Netflix series to be far superior。 I'm sure much of that is due to the amount of content and characterization as well as the dark humor。 I will continue on to volumes 2 and 3。Content: violence and some scantily clad women - it's a graphic novel, after all, but nothing really graphic, i Just watched this series on Netflix。 Yes, I'm behind the times。 Loved it so much! The show is so good! The comic was fun but not nearly as detailed as the show, but I liked it because it spawned the show, if that makes sense? Good artwork, interesting ideas and characters but it could be a lot longer to really flesh out those ideas and characters more, like the show does。

Federico

Well。。。 it’s obviously different from the adaptation - and it must be added that it’s easier to develop characters if you have ten 50minutes episodes - but UA is magnetic and fascinating indeed。 Well worth the high expectations I had

The first we get to see of Vanya she is in her underwear and her legs are spread。。。 Then she stands and we see her in a thong and her butt。。。 They could have drawn shorts。。。 pants。。。 kept a blanket over her lap, but NO! Gotta love the male gaze。 No diversity, even tho they are supposedly from all around the world。Had I not watched the show I'd very confused。 It tells the story in a very 'jumpy' way, constantly moving on to the next thing。 It kept me reading, but I would've liked to know more abo The first we get to see of Vanya she is in her underwear and her legs are spread。。。 Then she stands and we see her in a thong and her butt。。。 They could have drawn shorts。。。 pants。。。 kept a blanket over her lap, but NO! I have finished。 It was interesting。 RTC because I’m too tired to write a review right now。 Time to read a comic book just because it was written by Gerard Way。I don't even read comic books。But *gestures vaguely* Gerard Way。(view spoiler)[I think I've let this obsession get a little bit out of hand。Oops。(hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> I have finished。 It was interesting。 RTC because I’m too tired to write a review right now。 Time to read a comic book just because it was written by Gerard Way。I don't even read comic books。But *gestures vaguely* Gerard Way。(view spoiler)[I think I've let this obsession get a little bit out of hand。Oops。(hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

The White Violin is a very cool “Super。。。um。。。Hero”。 That said, and I’ve never written this before, but the Netflix series is better。

Una storia completamente fuori di testa, che ricorda molto la Doom Patrol。Ritmo veloce, non ci si annoia e il fumetto scorre in modo fluido, divertendo。Buon primo volume, consigliato。

There’s a fine line in comics between zaniness that makes sense and weirdness for weirdness’ sake。 For example, there was a loopy brilliance to Rob Schrab’s “Scud The Disposable Assassin,” where a self-destructive robot only maims its target and must work odd jobs to pay for its hospital bills, including battling a zombie Ben Franklin who uses electricity to reanimate dead dinosaurs。 While definitely way out there, the premise actually followed a logical progression。 On the other hand, there’s “ There’s a fine line in comics between zaniness that makes sense and weirdness for weirdness’ sake。 For example, there was a loopy brilliance to Rob Schrab’s “Scud The Disposable Assassin,” where a self-destructive robot only maims its target and must work odd jobs to pay for its hospital bills, including battling a zombie Ben Franklin who uses electricity to reanimate dead dinosaurs。 While definitely way out there, the premise actually followed a logical progression。 On the other hand, there’s “The Umbrella Academy,” My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way’s spin on the superhero team book, whose non sequiturs and plot developments have an almost Mad Lib-y randomness。 He seems to be throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks which gives the story a disjointed quality, underserving his admittedly very cool cast of characters。 Also, the climactic issue felt extremely rushed and abrupt, as though Way suddenly realized that it was only a six-issue miniseries and he had to wrap things up immediately。 What saves “The Umbrella Academy” from being a celebrity vanity project, however, is Gabriel Ba’s beautifully fluid, chunky, flat Mike Mignola-esque art。 In fact, in line with the “Hellboy” comparison, with a little more clarity in the writing, Way and Ba could very easily have a “B。P。R。D。”-style franchise on their hands。 。。。more

2,5Never thought I'd say this, but the series is way better than the comic in my opinion。 It was just too fast-paced for me, no depth for the characters, and just not my kind of art style。 I think I wouldn't have been able to follow at all, had I not seen the series before reading the comic。 2,5Never thought I'd say this, but the series is way better than the comic in my opinion。 It was just too fast-paced for me, no depth for the characters, and just not my kind of art style。 I think I wouldn't have been able to follow at all, had I not seen the series before reading the comic。 。。。more
